Boral Stonyfell Quarry
As day one of IQA 2024 national conference kicks
off, we’re excited to offer a site tour to the Boral Stonyfell Quarry. One of
the oldest quarries in Adelaide, Stonyfell was first regulated in 1837 and has been
a cornerstone in providing building materials for the city of Adelaide, its roads,
and railways over 180 years.
Conference delegates are invited to embark on a
journey to share the quarry’s history and evolution. The tour will provide a
firsthand look at the quarry’s operations, live demonstrations, and a visit to
the viewing area. Plus, enjoy a lunch amidst the picturesque surroundings.
About Boral Stonyfell Quarry
The Boral Stonyfell Quarry hosts significance in the South Australian History. The site was founded and started the supply of roadbase and aggregates to build the city of Adelaide back in 1837. The site hosts Private Mine 1 which is significant in itself, the first tenement to be held in the state.
Boral Stonyfell has been identified as a Strategic Mineral Resource Area (SRA) as part of the Resource Area Management and Planning (RAMP) project undertaken by the South Australian government.
The quarry hosts some of the best views over the Adelaide CBD, the below image represents the amazing views over the city of churches.
Boral Stonyfell will be the host to the 2024 Institute of Quarrying Australia National Conference Site Tour. The site continues to provide high quality extractive materials into Adelaide and surrounding areas. Of recent times, Stonyfell has been given state based recognition based on their environmental management of the site, namely with the updated Water Management Plan that has been influential in reducing offsite sediment impacts that ultimately feed downstream into the River Torrens. In addition, early intervention and vision by Boral to start rehabilitating pre worked upper benches has proved critical to enable social acceptance and the continued operation of the site despite dense urban encroachment of community over the past few decades.
We invite you to join us at the Boral Stonyfell Quarry for the Site Tour on Tuesday 15 October. Buses will depart the Adelaide Convention Centre from midday on a return trip to the quarry. Food and Beverages will be supplied as part of the Quarry Tour. A live display of Crushing and Screening along with an insight into the Quarry Operations will be a highlight whilst taking in the fantastic views of the Adelaide CBD.
